Americans Don’t Know Why We Celebrate the Fourth of July (short video & article)

If your answer is no, today is the day to find out. Our freedom gets taken for granted because we have it and we’ve had it for so long. But history is predominantly filled with oppressed people. Freedom is rare and only 5% of all the people in the history of mankind have ever experienced it. Appreciate it. Celebrate it!

Do you know why we celebrate July 4th?

Too many Americans say no. And it’s a darn shame because it’s such an important fact in our history. In fact, a majority of Americans don’t know a lot of important facts in American history.

Watch Mark Dice talk with California beach goers about the 4th of July. He, embarrassingly, finds that many Americans simply don’t know WHY we celebrate the 4th of July or what country we declared independence from.

This video identifies with a number of polls in recent years that show a disturbing amount of ignorance and ambivalence many Americans have when it comes to the founding of their own country, why they have freedoms and a high standard of living.

2011 Maris poll found that, “Only 58 percent of residents know that the United States declared its independence in 1776.” Around a quarter of U.S. citizens have no idea who America declared its independence from.

The numbers are even more upsetting when it comes to America’s youth. 14 percent of teens think that the U.S. declared independence from France, while another 5 per cent thought it was Canada. It’s England in case you were sitting there scratching your head.

I found this image on the internet of England’s perspective of the Fourth of July and thought I’d share because it was funny. Maybe it will help some of you remember who we fought a Revolutionary War against so we would no longer be under royal, oppressive, tyrannical rule.

Unfortunately, America has a new kind of tyranny in its hallowed halls of D.C. But that’s for another post.

Despite the unfortunate and depressing news of our growing national ignorance, I still want to wish every American a fantastic Fourth of July!!

I hope today is the day you decide to re-engage in our country’s beautiful history of becoming the most free land, the most prosperous people, and the country with an abundance of opportunity to pursue dreams. America truly is an exceptional country. But we all need to know its history in order to keep these gifts.

What we're about

THE FREEDOM
FRIEND's Mission

I use the measuring stick of freedom to measure if policies, laws, issues or morality are right and fair for everyone. Try it. If you believe in something, ask yourself “Is it fair and equal to everyone? Or just to some groups?”

Our Founding Fathers created a document unlike any other in history. The United States Constitution. It gave American citizens — ALL citizens — protection of their freedoms and natural rights by limiting the power of the government.

In all of human history, GOVERNMENTS have always oppressed the masses. Not companies. Not corporations. But tyrants. Dictators. Monarchs. Autocrats. Royal families. Governments. The people in charge of our laws, money creation, and military.

My goal is to help people recognize truths, lies, and hidden agendas, by using the measurements of morality and universal freedom for everyone to make better life decisions for a more free life.
